Tomorrow is really our last day open.

The kids did the windows. Did I even need to say that?

Have you heard those commercials from Henrick's Jewelers? First they were closing ... huge sales, everything must go, blah, blah. Now ... if we, the consumer, buys enough from them they'll be able to stay open! What an amazing twist of fate. I really really really don't like being misled, especially when it feels pretty dang intentional. Jason and I always joke that those businesses are just like the "going out of business" t-shirt shops on Duval Street in Key West ... that never go out of business.

Oh, anyway, tomorrow is our last day open. I've been asked so many times how I feel about it but I don't have an answer. I haven't let it sink in at all. Wait until next week when we're moving everything out ... that's when it'll hit me and the tears will really fall.

I miss my store being pretty. I do know that. It's so ... generic right now. I miss it having some personality (at least I thought it had good personality!). Hmm ... maybe I'll take that desire for pretty and spring clean my house ... yeah, probably not.

I'll miss getting a bit of a break from the kids. Really.

I know I'll miss all of you, my customers and friends. That's the hardest part, without a doubt. Thinking back over the last nine years ... such wonderful memories.

See me taking the picture? There was an image going around the Internet and e-mail of a dining room set someone was selling. Nice picture, nothing unusual ... until you looked closely at the dining room mirror. The guy taking the picture was naked as the day he was born (see it here, scroll to bottom of page). I'm not naked ... but everytime I take a picture of the store windows and see my reflection I think of that and giggle. edited to add: ok, maybe you can't see me, on my computer I'm cut off the side of the picture ... kind of blows this whole little story, doesn't it?

But the time has come to move forward. The biggest thing, of course, is that I need to be home with the kids ... our family needs me to be home. Jason and I have always had a lot going on between the five kids, home schooling, Ditto Kiddo, his full-time job, sailing, etc. and we're all ready for this change. I will say though that the last time I tried to stay home we opened the store ... I'm not good at not being crazy busy. I am, however, convinced that this is the right move for us and even though we've all (yes, each of the seven of us) brought up new business ideas over the last few weeks I'm not even looking (but the ice cream shop idea did sound really fun!).

My new adventure, Because I'm Me, is taking shape. It's a fun creative outlet and very rewarding. We have another project in the works, still in the early stages, that I'll mention either here or at my other blog in a few weeks that, if all continues to go well, will keep me very occupied ... for a very long time (I so want to spill the beans right now!).

I know what it's like to not get your fix ... the uncomfortable physical or mental changes that happen when the body is deprived of the awesome new and secondhand merchandise that it is accustomed to getting. Here's help:

Twinkle Twinkle Little Store in Naples ... I have no firsthand information about this shop but the girls who own it have been in a few times and are wonderful. It's located in the same plaza as Outback Steakhouse.

Small Wonders in Lehigh Acres ... this store is great. She's been open a few months, has a great selection of merchandise, and runs a really clean well-organized shop.

There is also a Once Upon a Child opening in Springs Plaza in Bonita Springs, near K-Mart where the dollar store used to be.

hello ... hello ... echo ... echo ...

When I was a child my family rented a cottage on the same lakes we now go to every summer. Midway through the chain was a bridge ... I think it was made of metal. It echoed really loudly and, of course, everyone had to hoot and holler as the boat went under the bridge. One summer my grandmother, who was quite ladylike ... a judges wife, taught us to call out "Board of Health" as we passed under the bridge. You must try it sometime.

We've mostly cleaned out the "newer" side of the store, the side we added a few years ago.

It's great. The kids can skateboard, play tag, run really fast, you know, all that really cool stuff I don't want them to do.

And the room echoes. Every time I answer the phone or say "hello" anywhere near there I crack up because it's SO loud, and so echoey, which I seem to forget, often.

We've already tried saying "board of health". The echo isn't quite that good ... but it's pretty good for a store.

So when drop by don't think I'm nuts for giggling. It's not you ... it's just the echo ... echo ... echo ...

Oh, and the fixtures in the photos are for sale, just so ya know.

Ditto Kiddo owners closing for retirement

"It's been nine years and my wife and I decided that we wanted to retire early," said Jason Sanders, who owns the Bonita Beach Road store with his wife Jody. "I think we both want to spend more time at home."

With The Ritz-Carlton's Grill Room demanding more time from Sanders - he's the restaurant's manager - and Jody Sanders devoting a lot of her time toward quilting and attending craft shows the decision to close the store was a tough one.

"Some of our customers are devastated," Sanders said. "Their kids have grown up with us. Our kids have grown up here."

The store, which is devoted to children's clothes and furniture, is expected to close within the next month.

"Our store is half-empty now," Sanders said. "We moved everything to one side."

To help move the remaining inventory in the store, Ditto Kiddo is offering 20 percent off on everything including fixtures and new items, Sanders said.

While the couple plans to spend more time at home, they have no immediate plans to sell the business.

"We've had some interest," Sanders said. "But we've decided to hang on to the name for a few years. We may want to bring it back at a later date."

Just a quick update:

We're thinking our last day open will be Saturday, April 19th. That's not set in stone, by any means, so keep checking the blog.

We have been very busy but started this closing with an extremely full store (intentionally!) so the shopping is still great. We actually still have a crib left, now priced at about $72.

Everything in the store, even NEW merchandise, is 20% off. (fixtures not included)

Hangers, at a whopping 5 cents each, are selling like crazy. Of course, every time we sell a piece of clothing we have another hanger available!

Jason just put out a bunch of DVD's. I'm not sure what, but they are the ones we used in the play area ... so they are popular titles.

Speaking of the play area ... the big gate, with three doorways, is for sale for $99. I'm sure that'll be gone in no time.

We have a lot of fixtures for sale ... standards, brackets, poles, racks, etc.

They are 5 cents each, available in any quantity (I've got a store full of them!), and can be shipped at buyers expense. The suit hangers will be mix and match, you'll get some of each kind. If you come in to get them you can pull out the ones you want yourself.

Why are you closing?
To be home with the kids.

When are you closing?
Today? 4:00. Oh, forever ... mid April, I think. We're playing it by ear.

When will things be marked down more and how much?
Again, we're playing it by ear. We'll probably do a second markdown next week sometime, but the item you're hoping to get at a lower price may well be gone by then.

Can I have a bigger discount now?
No.

Why don't you sell the store?
We do have some interest in that and are more than happy to discuss selling the store with anyone interested! We'd love to sell it to the right person. We think this is a great store and would love to see it continue to meet the needs of our customers.

Is the Melissa and Doug really on sale?
Yes.

Any chance you'll reopen elsewhere?
Anything is possible. But for now my focus is going to be on the kids and home schooling.

Mannequins

I've had so many requests for mannequins - pricing and sizing and such - that I thought I'd go ahead and post everything here.

First, I have soft doll like forms. They are a cream color from head to toe. The dolls are poseable, but don't have wire inside so they are best leaning against something, sitting, or posed just right that they stay put. Each are $25.
update 3/14/08: one remaining
1 are 27" tall and wear about 6-12 months clothing
2 1 are 33" tall and wear 18 month clothing
2 1 are 38" tall and wear 3-4T
2 1 are 44" tall and wear a 5-6

I have 2 one half forms on silver bases. They wear 12-18 month clothes and the height is adjusted at the base. Both of these have poseable arms but the shoulder sockets are broken so the arms hang naturally (they look fine but can't keep their hands above their heads). Each are $30.

I have 4 mannequins from the Gap, the kind they used to use. The four are full bodies and wear about 12 months clothes, but we've managed with 6 months up to 24 months depending on the items. The four do not come with stands but have openings at the backs of their legs to attach to a stand. They have cord at the back of their necks to hang them and have a maple toned disc at the neck opening. Each are $40.

I have two larger mannequins like the Gap kind but about a size 4-6 in clothing. Each are $40. all sold

I have many fabric covered foam forms that hang. They give a nice shape to clothes, looking much better than just a hanger! $10 each.
5 2 size small, approximately 6-18 months
5 2 size medium, approximately 3t-5
3 size large, approximately 6-7

I might have heads for some of the headless mannequins, but they are being sold as if they are headless because I haven't located all the heads yet. If I find them I'll include them!

We've started cleaning out the back rooms ... and, oh my, what a project that's going to be!

All hangers are available for sale for 5 cents each ... yes, 20 for just $1. That includes the good ones like these, which I paid an arm and a leg for. There are also some padded fabric covered children's hangers, those are going really fast, as well as adult and child plastic hangers.

All shelves are $2.90 each.

This morning I found a bag of new toys, lots of notepads and stuff, as well as some Pez dispensers, new in the packages and in sealed little bags. This stuff was behind the microwave and telephone. I remember buying the stuff, but have no idea when ... maybe 3-4 years ago? Would you think less of me if I told you the kids ate the Pez candies? Yeah, they did. They liked it too ... and only 35 calories for a whole little pack of candies.

Oh, the kids are cleaning out the store toys buckets and have already put out a few Thomas sets.

News

The time has come to say goodbye to all our company ...

Not yet, but over the next few weeks. Yes, after 8 1/2 years we're closing the doors of Ditto Kiddo.

The biggest reason ...

Jason and I want to be home more and focus on the family, homeschooling five kids and just plain raising five kids is where I need, and want, my focus to be right now

There are lots of other reasons mixed in with that but that's the short explanation! If time permits over the next few weeks I'll go into more detail.

Get into the store now! As soon as we tell people of our plans they buy, buy, buy because they know that now's the time. We've got some great stuff right now but it's going fast!

We're no longer buying any items, of course.

We'll be honoring all frequent buyer cards that are in circulation until the end of March, but will not be giving out any new ones.

Tomorrow will be the last Grandparent's Day.

We've been asked if the store is for sale ... sure! Jason and I have a price in mind, but are pretty flexible. If you are interested, act quickly because the landlord is actively trying to lease the space.

Will we be marking everything down? Yes, within the next week or two and I'll post an announcement here ... and even the new merchandise, like Melissa and Doug will be included.

Just about everything is, or will be, for sale ... fixtures, hangers, furniture, office supplies.

We're still bringing things out of the back room and will be for a week or two so the stock will continue to change ... but, like I said, hurry in 'cause once the inventory is gone it's gone!

Our years at Ditto Kiddo have been full of joy and the memories are awesome. I'm sure there will be some tears shed before this is over and done with (um, starting now).

Just arrived this morning. Ralph Lauren dresses and sweater, ranging between 12 months and 2T. $9.90 each.

***the colors on these pictures stink ... they're actually all taken against the same blue wall, which most closely resembles the sweater photo. When I started taking the pictures I had a perfect reflection for a car window, it worked like one of those reflector things they use in a photo shoot. And then the car left. Sigh ... the nerve of some people!

Just Another Manic Monday

Last night (Sunday evening) Ditto Kiddo was robbed. The thieves broke the electrical meters (second and third images) in an attempt to void any alarms we had and to shut off the eternal Christmas icicle lights, then entered the store, grabbed the few dollars left in the cash register and took off, leaving us with no power, no cash, and lots of broken glass to clean up.

Unfortunately, we had to be closed today. To those of you who offered a hug or an ear: thank you! I realize that we made some people unhappy today by not letting them in to shop and for that I'm sorry, but there's no way we could let anyone in with broken glass all over the place (and it was everywhere, all the way back to the back room) ... if a child, or anyone, were to be hurt it would horrible and not a risk worth taking.

Clean up went well and we'll be opening tomorrow morning at 10:00. FPL came out and had the power restored in no time at all ... I was expecting a much more time consuming process there but they really know what they're doing.

Oh, it's pretty impossible to tell from the picture but in the last one there's a funky looking black blob in the bottom left of the last picture ... that's where the rock (middle left side of top image) hit the carpet hard enough to gouge it and pull it up from the floor beneath (the carpet was originally glued down).

After all ... tomorrow is another day.

A Baby!

Jason and I met, many years ago, at-a-now-demolished-because-there-weren't-enough-condos-in-Naples restaurant where we both worked. That restaurant was also the place we met our much loved former employees, Kelly and Nikol ... and a lot of other really cool people, like Chad and Cindy.

The summer after Jason and I began dating he, Chad, Cindy, another crazy guy named Clark (whatever happened to Clark???), and Jason's cousin, Christian, decided to go to Alaska to fish salmon. And so they went ... none of the five of them had anything remotely resembling a plan, but they had lots of youthful something.

One fine day Chad's and Cindy's eyes met across a pile of fish guts and they fell in love ... and the rest is history (ok, that might be a slight embelishment, but they did fall in love).

After the summer ended the guys came back to Naples and resumed their "normal" lives ... except Chad and Cindy, who continued traveling, working throughout Alaska and the rest of the United States, and living the lives many of us dreamed of. Eventually they married and have been settled in Alaska for quite a while. And this year our Christmas card from them contained the birth announcement of their first child!

Because we met them in Florida we had to send something reminiscent of Florida, but we also had to keep in mind that they live in Alaska.

So here it is ... a matching, beautiful Because I'm Me blanket and burp cloth. The blanket is flannel with embroidered red crabs, with super soft chenille on the reverse side. The burp pad is the same soft blue flannel. In keeping with the Florida crab theme we included a Melissa and Doug first Play crab and a Leap Frog Crab Rattle.

Wow, 13 days since the last post ... that stinks. And it's not because nothing has happened at Ditto Kiddo! We've been quite busy buying summer clothing, cribs, toys, girls clothing in sizes 7 and up, and more, more, more. And sales are great ... our seasonal visitors are definately coming to town and what fun that is!

No, my only excuse for not posting is that we've (our family) been sick with some sort of cold bug that's going around. But we're all better now and back in action so I'll be catching up here in the next few days.

We've returned from all the holiday fun and are back to our normal schedule ... and, baby, it's cold outside!

Fear not ... we are well-stocked with winter jackets, jeans, sweaters, and long-sleeved shirts, all at great prices.

It's January, and that means we are no longer accepting winter clothing, so nothing with long pants or long sleeves. We begin taking winter clothing again on August 1st. We are happily looking at spring and summer clothing, which we accept year-round.

Items we need at this time include cribs, mattresses, pack and plays, jogging strollers, and bike trailers. We are also in need of highchairs, which, like everything else, need to be in like-new condition.

I hope your Christmas was merry and peaceful. I have "de-holidayed" the store ... always a bittersweet event, as nice as it is to get ready for the new year and things to come it's hard to take down the pretty green and red decorations as they add such color and life to the store.

Today brought the arrival of two new cribs, bringing the total available to five, priced from $69.90 to $149.90.

Over the last week we've also received a number of bassinets and cradles, all in excellent condition and ready to take home.

Cemetery Falls Into Disrepair

I am not sure what the solution is to this problem ... perhaps a group within one of the churches that own the property could take care of it? Or a scouts group? Or a group from a local high school looking for their community service hours? These groups may not be able to fix the memorial but could at least tidy up the cemetery and keep on top of the trash. I know the kids and I would be happy to volunteer to help out in any kind of effort.

My desire would be for the city to take over the upkeep of the cemetery, but they don't seem to agree with me there. In any case, something needs to be done.

Most of the historic buildings in Bonita Springs are long gone, either lost to fire, decay, or development, but we do have a wonderful rich history and it's important to remember it.

Over the summer my family discovered a small old cemetery in Rural, Wisconsin. Many of the gravestones couldn't be deciphered due to wear, but the ones we could read told such stories and gave such insight into the history of the area. The cemetery was well-maintained, telling us that the history there was respected and important. It was a very neat, memorable part of our vacation.

Why am I using cheap* child labor (which, apparently, I can get away with because they're family)? Let's see ...

Toys ... yesterday I couldn't walk to the backroom because we'd taken in so many wonderful toys, including some Thomas train items. I can walk now as all the toys are priced and put out in our full, but very organized and tidy, toy room

I received word this morning that the deli next to me, Taste, is going to be open for lunch (I'm not sure about dinner) starting in January. "Yum" is all I have to say about that!

Have you met our other neighbors yet? A few months ago our plaza became fully leased. First came a shop selling electric bikes and bathing suits, and then a women's resale shop. Both are worth a visit.

I read in the News-Press yesterday that the Toucan Grill is going to be reopened as something else by the owner of Wyld's. And there is now a post office in the plaza behind Toucan Grill, back in the corner business (a rubber-stamping shop) where the postal station was a few years ago ... I forget the name of the former business but it was a shells and touristy stuff shop, always full of customers.

This end of the road is picking up again.

Along the same subject line, please support local business. I know it's nice to go to Coconut Pointe or Target to do your shopping and dining but it's the local businesses that add to the character of Bonita Springs. Here's a really nice article that sums it up much better than I ever could. And if that doesn't sell you on shopping local then consider the difference in service at your locally owned store (like Ditto Kiddo) and the big guy (like Target, which, for some things, I like as much as the next guy) ... we know your name and we really care.

Tis the Season

It's so hard to get a picture of the front window. Plenty of glare in daylight, and not enough light at night. Sigh ... The window itself is pretty (I think so ... but then I did it). The mannequins are standing on wrapped black, white, silver, and red boxes with pink and white ribbon, and then they are surrounded by pink, white, and red hanging balls.

We've got our garland up, windows decorated, cinnamon candles lit, and Christmas music playing. Inside, it feels like the holidays are approaching ... outside it's 80+ degrees ... the best of both worlds.

We have a beautiful rack of Christmas wear and accessories, everything from pajamas to party dresses.

Homemade Baby Food

I made baby food for all of my kids, most especially the last three. In fact, I don't think Adam or Kaden ever ate a jar of storebought baby food. I did buy the rice cereal though because it's a great thickener and I tried different recipes for baby cereal at home and didn't have success until they were old enough to advance to oatmeal and the like.

Mia, the third child, wouldn't touch baby food. No way, no how. Never took to it ... she wanted solid food. At 7 months old she was eating pizza from the restaurant in our plaza. But that's a different story ...

And why am I posting this here, you wonder? Because with all the money you'll save you'll be able to shop more at Ditto Kiddo (and I just think it's a good idea).

It has been brought to my attention, after 8 years, that strollers and other items cannot be placed outside the store, not even on our own walkway (darn it!).

After much deliberation, and a good look at our available selling space, we have decided that we will no longer be accepting or carrying any strollers except jogging strollers, umbrella strollers, and bike trailers.

But of course there's a wonderful upside to this! All strollers are on sale this week for 30% off! At this time we have quite a few single strollers to choose from, as well as 2 double strollers, and one jogging stroller ... so hurry in and head out with your new set of wheels.

New stuff, new stuff, new stuff ...

Just when you've decided that all I do all day is sit around and eat bon-bons (I don't, but I can't deny that I've been eating pink m&m's ... to help fund breast cancer research, of course) ... I present some of the new items that have come in this week.

There is plenty more, like two white cribs ... pictures to come in the next day or two. Speaking of cribs, we've received the parts for the recalled Simplicity crib we have and it's ready to go to ... a pretty, simple light wood crib.

To change the subject completely, the kids and I kept very busy this afternoon doing markdowns ... lots and lots of markdowns, so come on in and check out the clearance racks.

We've also received a number of holiday dresses and outfits, enough that they are on their own rack. Now is the time to get these items, at our prices they don't last long.

At closing today we accepted a Little Tikes Climb and Slide Castle, as well as a neat Little Tikes water table.

We just happened to drop in to the Diamond District today. Seriously, not somewhere we go every day but so worth taking a look ... the diamonds are breathtaking. My gentlemen working there were so nice, really nice - not fake nice, and helpful.

The reason I'm telling you this is because as we were parking we noticed a new business, Kid Zoo. It's one of those kids play places ... looked interesting and worth checking out, and it's nice that it's in Bonita.

Clothing ... oh yes, lots of clothing.

If you've got a boy in a size 3 or 4 we've got clothes for you! Actually, there's a great selection in every size but the preschool boys rack is especially full, and all great brands like Gap, Gymboree, and Ralph Lauren.

Also, our larger girls clothing selection, sizes 8 and up, is exceptional. Roxy, Gap, Limited Too, etc.

High chairs ... we currently have six, including two Peg Perego. Baby swings ... also 6, including two cradle-style by Fisher Price.

Oh yeah, how could I not mention this sooner ... we have 3, yes THREE, single jogging strollers from $79.90 ... I'll try to post photos in the next day or two.

A Short Story

CPSC Staff Study: Home Lead Test Kits Unreliable

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) today announced the results of a special evaluation of consumer lead test kits. CPSC staff used commonly available test kits on a variety of paints and other products containing different levels of lead. Many of the tests performed using the kits did not detect lead when it was there (false negatives); some indicated lead was present when it was not (false positives). Of 104 total test results, more than half (56) were false negatives, and two were false positives. None of the kits consistently detected lead in products if the lead was covered with a non-leaded coating. Based on the study consumers should not use lead test kits to evaluate consumer products for potential lead hazards. These findings are consistent with previous CPSC staff test results. (more)

The Hut

So, have you been to The Hut? Have you even heard of it?

The Hut is a wonderful restaurant located in Buckingham near the world famous Buckingham Blues Bar (no, I don't know why it's world famous and I can honestly say I've never been there, but with a name like that it really is tempting).

We (Jason, me, and the kids) have dined at the Hut a few times and have always wondered why we don't get there more often. The price is reasonable, the seven of us ate for about $80 without alcohol (but 4 of those 7 were under 10). The service is outstanding, each time we've eaten there we've been more than happy with the service and that's saying a lot coming from current and former restaurant employees. Atmosphere is nice too ... all around a winner in our book.

Tuesday night is "all you can eat fish fry".

The real treats at the Hut are the gardens. Filled with both mature native and exotic species of plants and a beautiful waterfall and goldfish pond, the gardens are not only tropical and peaceful but educational too.

As the condos take over Naples and Fort Myers there are fewer and fewer real tropical restaurants that give that "Florida" feel, so we feel very blessed that the Hut remains. I would never say it has that "old Florida" feel though, as to me that conjures up images of perhaps not the cleanest or most modern ambiance, and the Hut is definately modern (updated a few years ago), clean, and spacious.

The history of The Hut:
Edwin Peace, a German man, sailed in the merchant marines. Upon his ship landing in Tahiti he met Princess Ramira Stephagee. He offered a pocket knife for Princess Ramira's hand in marriage. The couple choose to reside in Fort Myers and acquired the property where the Hut sits today.

Mr. Peace began experimenting growing various species of rare tropical plants. He was granted permission to import plants from all around the world, and succeeded in growing a tropical wonderland, which was admired and enjoyed by frequent visitors and friend, Thomas Edison. As a result of the close friendship between Edison and Peace, many rare specimens on the Edison Estate today came from the Peace Gardens.

Edwin and Lolita raised two children. A son, Oscar and a daughter, Lolita. Lolita became a famous Tahitian dancer and now resides in Miami. Oscar joined the Navy, and since retired to North Carolina and is now deceased. Princess Ramira Stephagee Peace died in 1967, and the children inherited the Peace Tropical Gardens.

Upon Lolita and Oscar parting ways, together they sold the property to Marie Louise Books Rector, who with her husband, owned and operated the famous Newagen Inn, in Newagen Maine, and the Royal Palm Hotel in Fort Myers. Marie had a dream for the newly acquired property. . . . In her dream, she visualized the gardens restored to their natural beauty, and a majestic tropical restaurant standing on the adjunct property in the unique and beautiful community of Buckingham. The dream became a reality and remains today for all to enjoy. The Hut Restaurant, a gem amongst the gardens. Perfect for a romantic dinner for two, a casual outing with a group of friends, celebrating a birthday with family and much more.

***It has been so busy today that it has taken me hours to write this (and all the italicized history was copied and pasted ) ... my point is simply this: eat at the Hut, go before it's dark and enjoy the gardens, and have fun. It's well worth it!

The quest for the best can drive some parents buggy

The above i'coo stroller is available at Ditto Kiddo for $149, significantly less than new (but you're the only one who'd ever know ... 'cause we're not telling anyone!).

To an extent I think the whole issue of having the best/most expensive stroller is silly, but I do find some of the higher-end stroller to have wonderful features ... and because those features can simplify your life (face it, you'll use your stroller a lot and convenient is very good) they are worth looking into. The i'coo has some great assets - it's lightweight, easy to use, nice big wheels, a carseat adapter, and more ... for $149 it's worth a second look, and a purchase.

Where the Baby Sleeps

A large amount of our business is, of course, baby stuff ... gear, clothing, furniture, toys, and other necessities. And this stuff can cost a lot of money! But here's the thing: It doesn't have to!

I titled this post "Where the Baby Sleeps" because not every baby gets his own room. Plenty of babies share with a sibling or room with Mommy and Daddy. Our kids are hybrids of sorts. For the first 8 months they were in our room, then shared a room with a sibling. Right now the two girls share a room, the two youngest boys share a room, and our oldest son has his own room (he's a terrible sleeper and would gleefully keep his sibling awake all night long).

When we were expecting #5 we realized it was time for a bigger living space and built a house with 5 bedrooms, and moved in when the baby was 3 months old. Ahhh... K. was the first baby to get his own room, and with a brand new house to work with I had fun decorating that nursery! I had fun, but I didn't go broke (well, maybe I did after decorating the whole house ... but that one room didn't break the bank!), and you don't have to go broke either.

The crib: I purchased my first crib for $45 at a resale store (Rock-A-Bye, that recently closed in Naples, carried new and resale when they had their location near downtown). That crib lasted through three of my kids and my niece. My second crib, purchased because the first crib was already occupied, was an inexpensive white metal crib, and worked quite well for us. Crib #3, the nursery crib, came from Ditto Kiddo. That beautiful crib was about $900 new, and it was priced at $299 at Ditto Kiddo. The moment that crib came in the front door I knew I was taking it home. It was love at first sight.

The cribs at Ditto Kiddo generally sell for between $60 and $299, depending on the original price and the condition. Currently we have a Ragazzi dark wood crib with a drawer, originally $799, for $199. You can't beat that price for a crib of that quality.

Speaking of quality ... some features to consider in your new crib:

hard or soft wood, or metal

wood color, or painted

hardware ... is it hidden or not, plastic or metal, easy to raise and lower the sides

style

drop sides ... do you want both sides to drop or just one, or none

convertible ... do you need the crib to convert to a toddler bed, or full size bed headboard

Some things we've noticed about cribs over the years:

a good crib will last a very long time and stand up through a number of kids

hard wood will resist dings, toy banging, teeth, etc.

very few people ever use their convertible crib as a toddler bed and we've never heard of anyone who used it as a bed headboard

a drawer underneath is great (extra storage is always great) but don't let a toddler stand in the drawer!

it isn't necessary to buy the most expensive crib on the market

wheels ... they are not recommended because a toddler may be able to find a way to rock the crib and move it across the room, but they are so convenient

for grandparents: easy to put together is key!

why a crib with drop on both sides: the only time this is necessary is if the crib is meant to be viewed from one end, for example a crib with a picture on one end-piece would be set up in the room a certain way, if it drops on both sides you've got more fliexibility with how the crib is placed

if you buy a crib without directions call the company, or check online, to get them

tight budget ... forego getting the exact look you want and put your money just into quality
most babies are out of the crib between 20 months and their 3rd birthday

This is getting long and there's still so much more to crib talk, but it's time to move on ...

Mattress: The two basic options are foam or innerspring. If your crib has a solid board under the mattress the foam will be fine. If you're using the mattress on a toddler bed you'll probably need the stability of an innerspring. On a basic crib with a springboard you can go either way, consider foam for a grandchild, innerspring if you'd like it to last through a few kids. You DO NOT have to spend hundreds of dollars on a crib mattress. We sell the expensive ones for $29.90 ... WalMart sells them for up to $160 ... if you decide to buy a high quality crib at a specialty boutique (but why would you when you can get the same crib at a fraction of the price at Ditto Kiddo?) do not feel obligated to buy a super expensive mattress from them.

Bedding Set: How much did you pay for the bedding set on your bed? The set you plan to use for years on the bed you sleep in nightly. What about your older kids beds? Ok, so why do we feel it makes sense to pay so much for crib bedding? Let me say this first ... Ditto Kiddo sells incredible bedding sets from $29 to $99, very rarely more than that.

First the nitty-gritty on bedding:

the quilt/comforter is not to be used in the crib, most people use it as a wall hanging or floor quilt

if a crib bumper is used (gray area ... there are many recommendations to not use bumpers), the bumpers should be removed when the baby is able to pull to standing so he doesn't use it as a step to get out of the crib

the sheet should fit well, not be loose under the mattress. If you aren't sure if it's secure enough use sheet or mitten clips to hold it securely

diaper stacker ... either you love it or hate it, I loved it and used it for all my kids, others can't see any value to it

the mobile should be removed when the baby can pull up on the side of the crib

DO NOT buy bedding that isn't machine washable ... what a headache that would be! Along the same lines, an extra sheet or two is very handy and you will use them. Crib bumpers are machine washable, but we recommend not machine drying them

When looking at bumpers keep in mind that a firm stiff bumper will hold up better and stay upright better than an understuffed one

my thoughts on crib sets on cribs ... the lighter the wood the darker the bedding set if you really want it to pop out, and the darker the wood the lighter the bedding set, of course a light colored set will look great on a light crib but to make both stand out we find that opposites work best

no blankets, quilts, pillows in the crib, instead dress baby in a warm enough sleeper

on a tight budget, or for a grandparent, you'd be perfectly fine to just buy a crib sheet and mattress pad for the crib

when looking at bedding be open-minded regarding gender. Painting a wall, or using a different color sheet can take a crib from boyish to girlish, and vice versa
remember that by the time your baby is 8 months old most of the bedding set won't be in his crib ... just the sheet

Now this post is just getting insanely long ...

Changing table - I loved mine, it was the perfect height for changing and gave me shelves for storage. I bought mine used and it lasted 10 years in my house, through 5 babies. I now use a changing table in my sewing room for folded fabric and it works perfectly for that. I've talked to other people who just use a bed to change the baby. My sister had a changing pad in her bathroom counter, up against a mirror ... baby could look at himself in the mirror, it was great.

Rocking chair or glider - I wouldn't have liked to live without it, great place to nurse or rock a baby or for Dad to sleep

Halloween Shopping at Ditto Kiddo

Today I can believe it's fall. I'm loving the nice breeze we've had yesterday and today. While the beautiful weather doesn't have me digging out the kids winter sweaters and coats (I so look forward to the few days they can wear sweaters!) it does have me thinking more seriously about Halloween.

We do have quite a few costumes at Ditto Kiddo, including an adorable clown and a menacing Darth Vader. All are priced between $1.9o and $7.90.

If you're interested in bringing costumes in they must arrive at Ditto Kiddo by this Wednesday, the 3rd of October.

When I was a child we usually made our own costumes. Some years we were treated to a store costume, complete with stiff plastic mask with gigantic eye holes, but most years we made our own. This was in Wisconsin and back before kids trick or treated at the mall so under or over our costume was our heavy jacket ... which kind of distracted from the costume!

But here we are in Florida, where my kids have never had to wear a jacket on Halloween, but where they still often have home made costumes, often out of parts of other costumes, things from the dress-up box, Ditto Kiddo shopping, and a bit of sewing from Mom.

Not only does the "make your own" technique of costuming save money but it allows the kids to be more self-expressive and creative. AND, we've found that the costumes that win the contests are usually home made ... and really really cool!

Last year three of my kids were the Blues Brothers (when they had the little kid with them), one was a good purple witch (using parts of store bought costumes), and the last was a pirate (he's always a pirate).

So what kind of costume could you make from your finds at Ditto Kiddo? Here are a few simple ideas:

denim overalls + flannel or t-shirt + hat + straw or raffia = scarecrow
jean skirt or jeans + white t-shirt + scissor-fringed vest = cowgirl or cowboy
shredded dirty white clothes + face make-up = mummy
jeans + white tee with sleeves rolled up + loafers = James Dean
white tee + white tights + stuffed pillowcase with arm and head holes cut out = marshmallow

Something strange and new is happening

Finally

Yeah, so this was fun when I posted the first picture two weeks ago, and we'd really given up hope by this one, but it has finally happened ...

They've painted our building!

This was supposed to happen around the beginning of June, if I remember correctly. The picture I posted two weeks ago is the bathroom window (yup, Nikol was right) ... yes they painted the bathroom window ... in fact, they painted it both times they've painted the building so it's got strips of the new and the old color. I can't really complain though ... we've still got hurricane wood on that window from Charlie (we're afraid to tempt fate by taking it down).

The second picture is the front of the store, and that's how it looked for a week and a half (Beth guessed correctly). They'd started painting and then it started raining and some of the paint dripped down the building. In some spots it was kind of cool, but overall ... not so much.

See what I mean?

But now here we are two weeks later with a fancy "terra cotta" colored building with bright blue roof. I'm happy ... it's definately more visible from the road and a much more current color. It'll make my life easier on the phone too ... no more saying "look for the kind of cream colored building with bright red and blue sign", now I can say "orange building with blue roof ... you can't miss it!".

Melissa and Doug Toys

As you know, I carry Melissa and Doug toys at Ditto Kiddo. With the multitude of recent recalls I feel it's important to state that Melissa and Doug toys are safe from lead paint and other toxins. The company has employees of their own at all their factories in China and testing is done constantly to make sure their products meet all US safety standards. Their toys are also retested after entering the United States. NONE of their toys have been involved in a recall.

I had the pleasure of speaking with a company spokesperson yesterday and have every confidence that their toys are safe, and will not hesitate to continue allowing my five children to play with them.
